Cost per Part = Material Cost per Part + (Cycle Time [hrs] × Machine Hourly Rate) + (Setup Time [hrs] × Machine Hourly Rate ÷ Batch Quantity) + Finishing/Tooling Cost per Part, marked up by Overhead %. Total Batch Cost = Cost per Part × Batch Quantity.
Example calculation
A part needs ₹120 of material, 8 minutes of cycle time on a machine billed at ₹900/hr, a 45-minute one-time setup, a batch of 50 pieces, ₹15 finishing cost, and 12% overhead: Machining = (8÷60)×900 = ₹120. Setup per part = (45÷60×900)÷50 = ₹13.5. Base cost = 120+120+13.5+15 = ₹268.5. With 12% overhead: ₹300.72 per part → ₹15,036 for the batch of 50.

Setup cost is the single biggest lever on per-part price for small batches — spreading a fixed setup cost over more pieces drives the per-part cost down sharply, which is why job shops quote a lower unit price for larger quantities. Always confirm whether a vendor quote already includes tooling wear, programming time, and inspection, or bills them separately — comparing two quotes side-by-side is only valid once you know what is bundled into each. Machine hourly rate should reflect the fully-loaded shop rate (machine depreciation, power, floor space, operator), not a bare labour rate, or true cost will be understated by a wide margin. This estimate is directional; a shop quote also factors in tolerance, surface finish, tool wear on hard materials, and scrap allowance.

Multiply by (1 + overhead %) to include shop overhead and margin. The setup-cost term shrinks as batch quantity increases, which is why larger orders get a lower per-part price.

Material and machining-time costs stay roughly constant per part, so batch size mainly affects the setup-cost share of the total.
