CO₂e = Activity data × Emission factor. Electricity: kWh × 0.82 kg CO₂/kWh (India grid average). Diesel: litres × 2.68 kg CO₂/litre. Petrol: litres × 2.31 kg CO₂/litre.
Example calculation
Site uses 50,000 kWh/month electricity and 2,000 litres diesel/month. CO₂e = (50,000 × 0.82) + (2,000 × 2.68) = 41,000 + 5,360 = 46,360 kg CO₂e/month ≈ 46.4 tCO₂e/month.

- What are Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions?
- Scope 1: Direct emissions from sources owned or controlled by your organisation — fuel burned in boilers, generators, and vehicles. Scope 2: Indirect emissions from purchased electricity, heat, or steam. Scope 3: All other indirect emissions in your value chain — purchased goods, employee commuting, waste disposal, product use and end-of-life. Most companies start with Scope 1 and 2; Scope 3 is broader and harder to measure.
- What is the India grid electricity emission factor?
- The Central Electricity Authority (CEA) of India publishes annual CO₂ baseline database reports. The national grid emission factor for FY 2021-22 is approximately 0.82 kg CO₂/kWh. This varies by region: southern and western grids with more renewables may be lower; coal-heavy grids may be higher. For annual ESG reporting, use the CEA's published factor for the financial year in question.
- How do I convert CO₂ emissions to a carbon cost (₹)?
- India does not yet have a mandatory carbon price, but the Perform Achieve and Trade (PAT) scheme and proposed carbon trading mechanisms give an indicative carbon price of ₹500–2,000 per tonne CO₂e. The EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) price is €40–80/tonne (for exports to EU, CBAM applies from 2026). Multiply your tonne CO₂e figure by the applicable carbon price to estimate financial exposure.
